How to Create a Direct Download Link for Images Hosted on Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Canva.

Learn how to create a direct download link to allow embedding of cloud-hosted images into your event pages.

Updated over a month ago

Embedding an image hosted on cloud storage platforms directly into a page on your Event Portal or registration form can sometimes be challenging due to the default sharing links provided by these platforms. Often, these links direct you to a "preview" page rather than the direct image itself. To get the actual download link for the image requires you to tweak the image link slightly.

Google Drive

As of January 2, 2024, Google has changed the user permissions to better protect user privacy. The previous method of using the "/uc?" path is no longer supported by Google. We therefore recommend moving your hosted images to a different web hosting service which supports embedding with direct links.

  1. Upload the Image:

    • If your image isn't on Dropbox already, upload it.

  2. Get the Share Link:

    • Right-click on your image file in Dropbox.

    • Choose "Create a link", select "View Only" access and then "Copy link".

  3. Modify the Dropbox Share Link:

    • The link you get will be something like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xyz12345abc/filename.jpg?dl=0

    • Replace dl=0 with raw=1 from the end of the URL obtained. The modified Dropbox download link should look like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xyz12345abc/filename.jpg?raw=1

  4. Embed in ClearEvent:

    • To embed the image click the Insert Image icon in the Rich Text Editor toolbar.

    • Paste the modified Dropbox Download Link from the previous step

    • Click OK

    • Save your changes.

OneDrive (Home or Personal):

  1. Upload the Image:

    • If your image isn't on OneDrive already, upload it.

  2. Access Your OneDrive Storage:

  3. Get Embed Image Link:

    • Pick the file you want to embed by selecting the check box in the upper-right corner of the file.

    • Select Embed at the top of the page, and then choose Generate.

  4. Embed in ClearEvent:

    • To embed the image click the Insert Image icon in the Rich Text Editor toolbar.

    • Paste the OneDrive Embed Link from the previous step

    • Click OK

    • Save your changes.

  1. Access Your Canva Account:

    • Go to the Canva website or open your Computer app to sign in with your Canva account.

  2. Get Embed Image Link:

    • Create or open an existing design.

    • Above the editor, tap on the Export icon.

• Swipe through the available sharing options. Tap Embed once you see it.

    • For your design to be embedded, it will be made public. Tap Embed to confirm.

    • Copy the HTML or smart embed link (e.g. Canva for Education teachers can embed Canva designs on Moodle using HTML codes).

  3. Embed in ClearEvent:

    • To embed the image click the Insert Image icon in the Rich Text Editor toolbar.

    • Paste the Canva Embed Link from the previous step

    • Click OK

    • Save your changes.

Note: Always ensure that you have the necessary permissions to share and embed images, especially if they're not your own. The methods above make the image publicly accessible to anyone with the link.

Now, you should be able to directly embed your images hosted on these platforms into any Rich Text field displayed on your Event Portal, or registration form.

Happy planning!
